Can a Device Treat Anxiety Without Drugs?

You have tried everything.
The supplements. The therapy. Maybe even a prescription you never felt great about.
You are still waking at 3 a.m. Still anxious before your feet hit the floor.
You are not failing. The treatment might be.
There is something you probably have not tried yet. And the research behind it is stronger than you would expect.

For many high-functioning women, anxiety and poor sleep persist even when conventional treatments fall short.
What Is Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation?
Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation, or CES, is a non-drug therapy that delivers a very small electrical current to the brain through clips worn on the earlobes. The Alpha-Stim device is the most clinically studied CES device available. It is FDA-cleared for anxiety, insomnia, and depression.
The current it produces is measured in microamperes, a fraction of what a AAA battery produces. You may feel a mild tingling, or nothing at all. A typical session lasts 20 to 60 minutes. Most people use it at home, on their own schedule, without a clinic visit.
Despite decades of clinical research and FDA clearance, most patients have never heard of it. It does not surface in a standard 15-minute primary care appointment. It sits in a gap between drug and non-drug medicine, which is exactly where functional medicine practitioners like Dr. Ravyn Ramos, ND, MHA, MSN, FNP-C, are most comfortable working.
Who Tends to Respond to Alpha-Stim?
CES is not a fit for every situation, but it has shown consistent benefit for people who match a recognizable profile. You may be a good candidate if you experience any of the following:
Anxiety that never fully switches off: A low-grade hum of worry that runs in the background even when nothing specific is wrong.
Insomnia that is not about sleep hygiene: You know how to wind down. You just cannot stay asleep, or you wake too early regardless of what you do.
Low mood that does not rise to a clinical diagnosis: Not full depression, but a flatness or fatigue that colors everything.
Medication sensitivity: You have avoided SSRIs or stopped them because of side effects, weight changes, or emotional blunting.
Medication plateau: You are taking an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication and have stopped improving.
High-functioning but running on empty: You are productive and capable on the outside. Sustaining that costs everything you have inside.
Perimenopause-related mood and sleep disruption: Hormonal shifts are destabilizing your nervous system and conventional interventions are not helping.
“Most patients who benefit from Alpha-Stim are not people who have given up. They are people who have done everything responsible and are still not well.”
Why Does CES Work? The Biology Behind It
Alpha Brain Waves
Alpha-Stim takes its name from the brain state it is designed to promote: alpha wave activity. Alpha waves are associated with calm alertness. They are what your brain produces during meditation, creative flow, or the moments just before sleep. In anxious or sleep-disrupted people, alpha wave production is often suppressed. CES appears to stimulate the thalamus and brainstem to restore this pattern.
Neurotransmitter Regulation
Research suggests CES influences serotonin, dopamine, and beta-endorphin levels. It also appears to reduce cortisol, the primary stress hormone. This is not the same mechanism as an SSRI, which blocks serotonin reuptake. CES works upstream, affecting how the brain produces and regulates these chemicals in the first place.
Autonomic Nervous System Tone
Many anxiety disorders are driven, at least in part, by a nervous system that is stuck in sympathetic overdrive. The fight-or-flight response fires too easily and takes too long to turn off. CES appears to support a shift toward parasympathetic tone, the rest-and-digest state, without sedation or cognitive blunting.
No Systemic Side Effects
Because the current does not circulate through the body, there are no systemic side effects. No weight gain, no sexual dysfunction, no gastrointestinal upset. The most commonly reported adverse effect in clinical trials is a mild headache during use, which resolves when the session ends. Some users report brief dizziness. Both are uncommon.

At Solshine, Alpha-Stim prescriptions are paired with a root-cause lab workup to identify what is making the nervous system harder to regulate.
What a Root-Cause Workup Looks Like at Solshine
Alpha-Stim works on its own. It works better when it is not carrying all the weight. At Solshine, Dr. Ramos pairs device therapy with a functional medicine lab panel to identify any underlying drivers that make the nervous system harder to regulate. Common findings include:
Full thyroid panel (TSH, Free T3, Free T4, reverse T3): Subclinical hypothyroidism is a major contributor to anxiety, sleep disruption, and low mood that standard labs routinely miss.
Sex hormone panel (estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S): Hormonal shifts in perimenopause directly alter GABA and serotonin receptor sensitivity.
4-point salivary cortisol: A flat or inverted cortisol curve explains why some people feel wired at night and foggy in the morning. Chronic stress dysregulates the HPA axis.
Micronutrient panel (magnesium, zinc, B12, ferritin, vitamin D): Deficiencies in any of these impair neurotransmitter synthesis and nervous system recovery.
Inflammatory markers (hsCRP, homocysteine): Neuroinflammation is increasingly recognized as a driver of treatment-resistant depression and anxiety.
Fasting insulin and glucose: Blood sugar instability is a common and underrecognized trigger for anxiety, mood swings, and disrupted sleep.
The right approach for someone with low progesterone looks different from the approach for someone with subclinical thyroid disease or magnesium deficiency. Without this information, care is guesswork.
Alpha-Stim Support at Solshine: What We Offer
The Alpha-Stim device is one part of a broader care model. Every plan is built around your labs and your history. Here is what support looks like at Solshine:
Service | What It Addresses | How We Deliver It |
Alpha-Stim CES Device | Anxiety, insomnia, and depression symptoms; particularly useful when medication is insufficient or unwanted | Device rental or purchase; prescribed and monitored via telehealth |
Root-Cause Lab Workup | Thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, nutrient deficiency, cortisol dysregulation underlying mood and sleep disruption | Lab draw + telehealth review |
Personalized Wellness Protocol | Diet, sleep, supplement, and lifestyle factors that affect nervous system regulation | Personalized protocol + telehealth coaching |
Compounded BHRT (when indicated) | Estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone imbalances affecting GABA, serotonin, and sleep architecture | Compounded BHRT when indicated |
Prescription Management | Coordination of any existing medications, including SSRIs or sleep aids, with your primary care provider | Prescription management + follow-up |
Coordinated Care | Conditions requiring psychiatric oversight or specialized follow-up beyond Solshine's scope | Coordinated care with local providers |
What About Antidepressants and Anti-Anxiety Medication?
Alpha-Stim is not a replacement for medication in every case. If you are currently taking an SSRI, SNRI, or benzodiazepine, do not adjust or stop your medication without coordinating with your prescribing provider.
What CES offers is an adjunct approach. Research supports its use alongside existing medication to improve outcomes, particularly in patients who have partially responded but still have residual symptoms. Some patients, over time and in collaboration with their prescribers, find they are able to reduce medication doses. That is never the starting goal, and it is never done unilaterally.
Dr. Ramos works closely with your primary care provider to ensure that any changes to your medication regimen are safe and medically supervised.
The Anxiety-Insomnia Loop Is Real
Anxiety and insomnia are not two separate problems in most people. They feed each other. Anxiety disrupts sleep. Poor sleep lowers the threshold for anxiety the following day. The nervous system never fully resets.
CES addresses both simultaneously, which is one reason it tends to produce meaningful results when single-target interventions have fallen short. If depression is also part of the picture, the research is equally encouraging: multiple randomized controlled trials have found significant reductions in depressive symptoms with regular Alpha-Stim use.
Hormonal contributors are worth exploring as well. In perimenopausal and postmenopausal women, estrogen and progesterone shifts directly alter GABA receptor function. This is why anxiety can emerge or worsen in midlife with no obvious psychological trigger. A hormonal workup is often the missing piece.
📋 A NOTE ON OUR CARE MODEL Dr. Ramos specializes in functional medicine and mental health but is not a psychiatrist. All patients must maintain a primary care provider while under our care. Conditions requiring psychiatric oversight, such as bipolar I or active psychosis, require co-management with an outside psychiatrist. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room. |
