Taming the Foggy Monster

Hey. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably got fourteen browser tabs open, a half-finished latte that’s gone stone-cold on your desk, and a calendar that looks like a game of Tetris you’re actively losing.

And lately? Your brain feels… weird. Not “I need a vacation” weird (though yes). More like the foggy monster moved in, ate your working memory, and replaced your sharp edges with static. You know what you’re capable of, but your execution is gone AWOL.

If you’re a high-performing professional in Seattle or anywhere in Washington state (hello, PNW pressure cooker), you know the vibe: high stakes, tight timelines, and a culture that rewards output. The world tells you to “optimize” with another app, another nootropic stack, another double espresso.

But if you’re dealing with brain fog, executive dysfunction, or ADHD-like symptoms, a new Moleskine isn’t going to fix the fact that your brain feels like a Ferrari with bicycle brakes.

At Solshine Wellness Group, we don’t treat you like a productivity problem. We treat you like a whole system. And if you’ve been told your only option is “try harder” or take something that makes you feel jittery and “wired but tired,” I have good news: there’s a research-driven, root-cause way to get your clarity back.

When “Trying Harder” Hits a Wall (And Your Brain Just… Buffers)

In the high-pressure ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest, productivity is basically a personality trait. But when you’re dealing with brain fog or executive dysfunction, “discipline” isn’t the missing ingredient.

Executive dysfunction isn’t just distraction. It’s:

  • Task initiation paralysis (you want to start, you just can’t)

  • Working memory glitches (you walk into a meeting and forget why you’re there)

  • Decision fatigue (everything feels like a heavy lift)

  • Cognitive drag (reading the same email three times and still not absorbing it)

And yeah—sometimes it overlaps with Adult ADHD. Sometimes it’s sleep, hormones, inflammation, nutrient depletion, metabolic dysfunction, chronic stress physiology, or stealthy toxins. Sometimes it’s all of the above.

The standard medical approach often stops at a diagnosis and a prescription. Meds can be life-changing for many people (truly). And just to be super clear: at Solshine, we’re not “anti-med.” I prescribe stimulants when they’re the right fit—and I also help patients safely transition off stimulants (or other ADHD meds) when that’s a better match for their body, brain, goals, side effects, or season of life.

Quick nerdy-but-useful note on how they work: stimulants generally increase dopamine and norepinephrine signaling in the prefrontal cortex, which can improve focus, working memory, and impulse control (aka: the “executive function” stuff that’s been going AWOL).

And stimulants aren’t the only route. Depending on your pattern, we may talk about non-stimulant Rx options too—like Atomoxetine or Guanfacine—as part of a personalized plan.

Bottom line: if your goal is high-performance clarity that’s sustainable, you deserve a plan that’s tailored to you—and you also deserve to know why your brain is running like it’s on low power mode.

That’s where functional medicine—and my role as your “medical detective”—comes in. We’re looking for the bottleneck that’s tanking your cognitive bandwidth.

The Functional Medicine Performance Lens: Cellular Efficiency > Willpower

In functional medicine, we don’t just ask, “What symptoms do you have?” We ask, “What’s driving them?” When it comes to brain fog, executive dysfunction, and cognitive performance, we look at the internal environment that fuels your brain.

Think cellular efficiency:

  • Your mitochondria = your power grid

  • Your nutrients = your raw materials

  • Your hormones = your timing + signal integrity

  • Inflammation/toxins = the friction and “gunk” in the gears

If the system is depleted and inflamed, it doesn’t matter how hard you “push.” You’ll still feel like you’re running a premium machine on low-grade fuel.

1) The Nutrient + Neurotransmitter Baseline (Vitamin D, B12, Magnesium)

Let’s be real: in the PNW, low Vitamin D is practically a regional sport. Vitamin D acts more like a pro-hormone than a vitamin, and it plays a role in immune regulation and brain signaling. When it’s low, cognitive resilience can take a hit.

We also look closely at Vitamin B12 (energy metabolism + nervous system support) and magnesium (calming neurotransmission + sleep support). If your sleep is fragile, your focus is fragile. Period.

At Solshine, we can use targeted IM Vitamin D and B12 shots (in Seattle on clinic days) to bypass absorption issues and deliver nutrients more directly—especially when the gut is not cooperating.

2) Inflammation + Oxidative Stress (The “Fog Fuel”)

If your body is inflamed, your brain often pays the price. Neuroinflammation can show up as:

  • slower processing speed

  • low motivation/drive

  • “cotton in the head” fog

  • mood volatility

This is where glutathione—the body’s master antioxidant—can be a powerful support. We use Glutathione IV/IM therapies (when appropriate) to help reduce oxidative stress and support detox pathways that may be contributing to cognitive fatigue.

3) Hormone + Stress Signaling (Cortisol, Sex Hormones, Thyroid)

Hormones like cortisol (stress physiology), estrogen/progesterone, and thyroid hormones can absolutely affect attention, motivation, and mental stamina. If you’ve noticed your symptoms spike during intense work seasons, life stress, or cycle transitions—nope, you’re not “being dramatic.” That’s physiology.

We investigate these patterns with a root-cause approach, and yes, sometimes that means looking at perimenopause-related changes. (More here: understanding perimenopause syndrome.)

4) Advanced Testing (Because “Guessing” Isn’t a Strategy)

If you’re a sophisticated, data-driven person, you’ll appreciate this part: we love advanced lab testing because it helps us stop playing symptom whack-a-mole.

Depending on your history and goals, we may consider:

  • Comprehensive bloodwork (nutrients, metabolic markers, inflammation markers)

  • Thyroid and sex hormone evaluation (timing matters)

  • Gut health testing (because absorption + inflammation can drive brain symptoms)

  • Toxin/mold burden assessment when your story fits (especially in the damp PNW)

  • Other targeted testing based on your personal pattern

Functional medicine is about using data to personalize your plan—so your brain stops feeling like it’s running on glitchy software.

The Executive Dysfunction Toolkit: Calming the Noise (So Performance Can Return)

Sometimes you don’t need “more drive.” You need less nervous-system interference. This is why we’re big fans of the Alpha-Stim device.

Alpha-Stim is a clinically proven medical device that uses Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) to support anxiety, insomnia, and that relentless mental “chatter” that makes it hard to focus—especially when you’re already burned out.

The best part? We offer Alpha-Stim device rentals. You can use it at home while you’re checking emails or winding down for bed, and see how it supports calm, sleep, and cognitive steadiness—without adding another supplement pile to your counter.

NAD+ Therapy: The Brain’s “Power Upgrade” for Burnout + Fog

If you’re a Seattle professional—or a Washington-state remote exec who lives on Zoom—you’ve probably heard the buzz about NAD+. Think of NAD+ as a coenzyme involved in cellular energy production (mitochondrial function). When your system is depleted, cognitive performance can drop fast.

Important Solshine note (so there’s zero confusion): we do not offer NAD+ as an IV infusion. At Solshine Wellness Group, NAD+ is typically prescribed as a subcutaneous (SQ) injection for patients (a small “under-the-skin” injection), as part of a broader plan to support energy, clarity, and resilience—especially when burnout has your brain feeling like it’s running on 2% battery.

Also worth spelling out: NAD+ SQ injections are a separate category from our IV/IM nutrient therapies. Things like B12, Glutathione, and Vitamin D are delivered as IV and/or IM nutrient therapies (primarily in-clinic in Seattle on Thursdays and occasional Fridays), and they’re not the same thing as NAD+.

And because cognitive performance is tied to metabolic health, we may pair this work with other supports when appropriate—including our comprehensive weight loss program (which may include GLPs for those struggling with metabolic contributors to fatigue and fog). The goal isn’t a “quick fix.” It’s a systems upgrade.

A Whole-Person, High-Performance Philosophy (Seattle In-Clinic + Washington Telehealth)

At Solshine Wellness Group, we don’t believe you’re “broken.” We believe you’re a complex biological system trying to function inside a very demanding world.

Whether your fog is tangled up with depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic stress physiology, or the specific hurdles of adult ADHD, our goal is the same: help you feel like you again—clear, steady, and capable.

And yes, we’re built for real schedules:

  • Seattle In-Person Clinic (Thursdays + occasional Fridays): Ideal for IV/IM therapies, Alpha-Stim fittings, and face-to-face consults.

  • Telehealth-Focused Care (all other days): We support adults across Washington state (and additional licensed states) from your home or office—because performance medicine should fit your life.
